M&S Simply Food Stores

Marks & Spencer was founded in 1884 and has grown from a single market stall to become an international, multi-channel retailer. It has 914 UK stores, including 222 owned and 349 franchise Simply Food stores which account for 50% of UK turnover.

Tecserv UK had been installing and maintaining commercial fire alarm systems and security systems within existing M&S retail and food stores a number of years. In 2017, Tecserv UK was subcontracted by Eco-1, a leading green electrical installation company to install fire alarm systems as part of an ongoing project to upgrade existing stores in order to install the latest technology.

The Challenge

The latest in commercial fire alarm system technology had been specified to meet Marks & Spencers’ very stringent fire and safety policies and procedures. Each new store was installed with an analogue addressable fire alarm system utilising Apollo Discovery Protocol.

The works involved Tecserv UK working as one of a number of preferred suppliers involved in this extensive capital project aimed at rolling out new ‘Simply Food’ retail stores in various locations across the UK.

Our role included the installation of commercial fire alarm systems within 21 new stores during 2017. These included: Chilwell Nottingham, Queens Drive in Liverpool,  two in Sutton Coldfield and a number of sites in London.

The Solution

Apollo Fire Detectors Ltd specialises in the design and manufacture of high-quality fire detection solutions for commercial and industrial applications. In 2009, Apollo was awarded the Royal Warrant by Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, in recognition of its official supplier status to the Royal Household. Apollo was the first UK company of its kind to hold three consecutive Queen’s Awards for Export Achievement.

Apollo was chosen because their smoke and heat sensors have a high immunity to false alarms but are able to quickly distinguish a real fire situation.

The Outcome

Using products from manufacturers with such high credentials enable Tecserv to meet high quality engineering standards and customer satisfaction.

Commenting, Tecserv UK, project Manager Lewis Russell said, “We are very conscious of the need to liaise with other contractors working on each new build to ensure that our installation timetable is kept in tune with other works being carried out.  We ensured strict compliance with fire safety regulations and that our phase of the project is completed on time and within budget.”
