Uppingham School

Tecserv UK has been managing the school fire alarm system maintenance programme at Uppingham School since 2008.

Founded in 1584, Uppingham School is one of Britain’s leading co-educational independent boarding schools.  Almost all of the 800 pupils are accommodated in 15 boarding houses.  The academic structure is supported by departments responsible for admissions and marketing, maintenance of buildings and grounds, finance, HR, catering, the school-wide IT network, domestic affairs, health care, sports centre, and the School’s trading subsidiary.

In term-time (about 32 weeks each year) the School operates seven days a week. In the summer months it operates a commercial summer school.  It has approximately 600 full-time and part-time employees.

The School is a Registered Charity and governed by 24 voluntary Trustees, who are responsible for guiding the Headmaster and Bursar in matters of governance and strategy.  The School’s estate includes 120 acres of non-contiguous grounds and 75 buildings, mostly large, many old, and 23 that hold listed building status.

The challenge

Prior to Tecserv’s appointment, maintenance was being carried out using a combination of in-house personal together with another provider who looked after some but not all buildings. Uppingham School decided they would like to place the entire contract with one fire alarm system maintenance specialist with the capabilities, skills and expertise to take over the servicing of the all fire alarms across the entire school site. For a short while, this meant working with the existing provider until the end of their contract.

The most recent work involved installation of new control panels to replace of old panels, and the installation of  upgraded detection in various buildings due to the age of the panel and detection devices.

TecservUK visited each building with plans and checked everywhere including basements, ceiling and roof voids to see if further detection was needed, particularly in buildings where there was no fire detection. The school also needed to fill the gaps within some buildings to bring them in line with an L1/L2 system.

Because some buildings had old conventional half addressable systems the school also decided to upgrade their system so that all were addressable systems.

The solution

Having been issued with a summary of the school site and following a thorough on-site assessment, Tecserv UK was appointed to carry out regular fire alarm system maintenance and servicing. We now visit the school according to the agreed service schedule to inspect all buildings and test all components to ensure the fire alarm system is functioning effectively and that Uppingham School complies with the required fire safety regulations.

Our engineers are also on hand 24 hours a day, 365 days a year to ensure that any unforeseen maintenance issues are fixed promptly. We also work with staff to help them educate staff and pupils on fire safety and how to avoid triggering unwanted fire alarms.

The outcome

“Tecserv UK always provide excellent advice whenever we need any aspect of fire safety explaining. They were particularly helpful during the upgrade of our fire alarm systems and very helpful if I ever needed to ring them to ask questions about previous work, or we are experiencing issues with our system. The project to install new fire alarms in the buildings progressed smoothly and the installers were friendly and tidy workers. They were very approachable and patiently took the time to work with me when it came to the details of the detection locations on the panel.”

“The service department is always on hand for advice on faults and if I don’t get through directly they will always ring me back. When Tecserv engineers are on site everyone comments about how friendly and helpful they are. From my perspective, it is also good to have the same service engineer every time, as they now know the buildings well enough that I can leave them to it. This saves me time and means I don’t have to keep showing a new engineer around.”
