Fire alarm manufacturers Honeywell Gent have sent out a notice to all their approved distributor network advising that they will no longer be manufacturing the Gent 34000 series of fire alarm sensors and devices. This means that if you still have a 34000 system and get a faulty smoke detector and a problem with your fire alarm panel you will not be able to purchase replacing parts for it.
How do I know if I have Gent 34000 series sensors and devices?
The first place to check is your alarm panel to check the brand of system you have installed. If it says ‘Gent’, our advice is to contact your alarm system maintenance provider and ask them if your installation may be affected. Rather than self-check if your devices have been upgraded, the safest option is to have it confirmed in writing by your fire alarm maintenance company as you will have recorded evidence that you have raised this question with your provider.
There is no concern over the performance of these components, but they are ageing and parts are becoming obsolete which could delay the time it takes to rectify a fault, thus placing your business at risk, so it far safer to act now and ensure these devices are upgraded.
Why have Gent ceased manufacture of the 34000 Series?
The Gent 34000 series of sensors and devices have been sold by Gent since 1995. They have sat proudly in their product range alongside S-Quad since 2005, which has allowed Gent to support a large legacy installation base.
However, in recent years, Gent has found it increasingly difficult to source the correct components for this ageing device range and it has now come to the stage where they are unable to continue to manufacture them.
Why do I need to take action now?
First and foremost, it is your legal responsibility to ensure your fire alarm system is regularly maintained.
Gent are providing customers with notice to place any last time orders before 15th August 2019 in order to maintain any existing sites that may require ongoing support. No further orders for the Gent 34000 range will be possible after this date.
Honeywell Gent have always tried to make it simple for customers to support and upgrade existing sites, and they have recently made it even easier to replace the 34000 detectors with S-Quad by using their specially designed S-Quad Adapter Base (S4-700-34k).
Gent are also aware that there may be a small number of sites that have not yet been upgraded to support S-Quad and that may require either a panel or software upgrade, in order to support the current range of, S-Quad detectors. If this applies to your site you need to take action before 15 August.
Failing to act could result in a fire alarm system that cannot be quickly repaired if should a detector or component failure occur.
